Went to see Vincent Moon and Efterklang’s “An Island” last night. Showed about an hour later than scheduled but well worth the wait. It’s a little like an hour long music video, but I didn’t get bored. Efterklang’s brilliant music make it really, but Vincent Moon captures significant moments and gives some explanation as to how some of the sounds are made. Efterklang make noises out of pretty much anything, and do it well. The film is briefly broken up by small segments of dialogue between music which helps to distinguish one part to another. It ends beautifully on Efterklang playing with the help of a school, where the kids all scrumple up paper and stamp their feet in time (or nearly in time for some). There’s quite an incredible scene where Efterklang play in what looks like a barn with everyone around helping them out, along with an old lady playing an instrument and various singers/general noise makers. All in all pretty damn great.
